Once the path has been created, you can turn the elements for the path you’ve created into an actual road that vehicles can traverse. You will then get to place some plans by pressing up on the D-Pad to follow the guidelines and build a scaffold for the bridge. When using the Joy-Con, the left analog stick will move your on-screen cursor around, and the B button will be used to erase components. One short interview and a quick loading screen later, you will find yourself in the first test chamber which is aptly named “My first bridge.†You can either control the action with the Joy-Con while playing Bridge Constructor Portal in docked or in portable or tabletop mode, but while playing in the last two console configurations, you will also be able to use the Nintendo Switch’s touchscreen to click away and start building! Get the answers wrong, and it will be time for a short and painful visit into the hot and deadly incinerator! Get the answers right, and off you will go to your new job at Aperture Science. That is after you complete a short interview section that is screening between applicants to find the one that would be perfect for the job. Oh, and GLaDOS is back as well for the ride, voiced by Ellen McLain!Īnd speaking of that, it will be GlaDOS herself who takes you through the game’s tutorial as you learn the basics of this clever simulation puzzle game. You’re a new employee in the Aperture Science test lab, so you will be tasked with build a ton of bridges, slides, ramps, and more to take on the challenges you will face through the 60 test chambers on offer, as you try to get the Bendies from point A to point B in one piece, so that they can ride through the course on their vehicles to live another day.Īfter reading that paragraph, the game sounds as if it was nothing more than a reskin of a Bridge Constructor game to add the Portal license on top and call it a day, but this game is anything but that! You’ll make good use of items such as propulsion gel, repulsion gel, the beloved portals, cubes, and other stuff so that you can keep the Bendies safe from the casually placed sentry turrets, the deadly baths of acid, and more. Yeah I know the voice is just a robotic AI, but the line delivery is spot on.Bridge Constructor Portal is exactly what you’d think of when hearing the name: a mash-up between Bridge Constructor and the Portal franchise. There is no notable soundtrack, however the various sound effects are well done and the voice acting for GLaDOS is perfect. I’m no developer, but I’d venture to guess that my PS4 Pro should be able to handle this without a hitch. The big disappointment here is that despite the simple visuals, performance still takes a big hit if there happens to be some mass destruction. Nothing fancy or highly detailed, but the color palette is bright and shadows do cast dynamically wherever you construct a road. The graphics are simple, but they’re clean and well done. None of the levels feel impossible, but there are a decent chunk that will have you scrapping your project and restarting. Vehicles seen by the targeting laser are marked for disqualification … followed by rapid disassembly.” There are 60 levels in total, but it doesn’t really start ramping up until mid way through. Everything is just a little slower with the controller.Ĭontroller aside, the levels are well done and do get challenging. There were a handful of times that I selected or deleted the wrong item and if that item is attached to others it will delete that section. You’ll need to zoom in and out a lot to try and get around quicker or try and select specific areas, especially when the bridges get bigger and more complicated. There isn’t a story or anything, but there is a sense of progression since every 10 levels you get a promotion to handle more difficult sections.įor the most part using a controller is doable, but of course it lacks precision and quick actions. You’ll utilize various portals, jump pads, speed ramps and companion cubes to get your lemmings safely across various death traps. You’re required to get the drivers and their equipment from point A to point B safely. Not only is it one of the best bridge constructor type games I have ever played, it also happens to be a really fun Portal game.Īs I’m sure you can guess, you’re tasked to construct bridges for the Aperture Science Enrichment Center. Bridge Constructor Portal was another one of those that had me scratching my head until I actually got my hands on it. We’re seeing a trend lately of game mash-ups that seem like they wouldn’t work very well, like the recent Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle.
